Theatre hall

Stage-audience acoustic balance for theatres, operas and performance halls. Speech intelligibility (STI 0.60+), reverb character (RT60 0.9-1.4 s) and stage reflection control.

Summary

Theatre-hall acoustics is the classic acoustic-engineering field that ensures the on-stage performance reaches the audience with the right acoustic character, the actor's speech is intelligible and the venue feels "alive". RT60 0.9-1.4 s is the ideal range for theatre — the balance between too dry (lifeless) and too reverberant (chaotic).

What is theatre acoustics?

Theatre acoustics is the design discipline that delivers the sound produced on stage (speech, music, sound effects) to the audience with optimal character. It differs from a concert hall — speech intelligibility takes priority over music, airborne sound is moderate, and the acoustic connection between stage and audience must be clear.

Ideal RT60 values

  • Theatre / drama: 0.9-1.2 s
  • Musical: 1.2-1.5 s
  • Opera: 1.4-1.8 s
  • Concert hall: 1.8-2.2 s
  • Conference / presentation: 0.6-0.9 s

Design components

  1. Stage shell: reflects sound from behind the stage to the audience
  2. Ceiling reflector: early reflection in the stage-front area
  3. Side-wall reflector: carries stage sound to side seating
  4. Rear-wall absorber: echo (delayed reflection) control
  5. Under-balcony absorber: resolves the side acoustic-shadow zone
  6. Seat selection: acoustically balanced fabric upholstery

Speech intelligibility — STI

STI in a theatre must be 0.60+ at every audience point. Site simulation calculates STI per seat; dead spots (acoustic shadows) are identified; if needed, ceiling reflectors are repositioned.

Contemporary theatre designs

In modern theatres variable acoustics systems are increasingly common; acoustic-panel positions can be changed by show type (reflective for classical, soft for musical). In our practice we design manual panels for small theatres and motor-controlled systems for large operas.

Target performance

  • RT60: 0.9-1.4 s (for drama theatre)
  • STI in audience zone: 0.60+
  • NC: 25 (quiet background)
  • Early-reflection support: 50-80 ms delay

Lead time and cost

Theatre projects 6-16 weeks. 15-25% of the construction cost is acoustic design and installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Theater hall — which materials do you use?
Depending on project requirements, we use acoustic foam, barrier-backed foam, lead/EPDM barrier, elastomeric rubber, rock wool and double-layer plasterboard systems. All our materials carry international fire-resistance certifications.
How much noise reduction do I get after the application?
It varies according to the existing structure, the adjacent noise level and the target use. Typical residential applications achieve 25-40 dB and industrial projects 35-55 dB. The exact value is confirmed by acoustic measurement.
Do I need to move my existing furniture?
It is enough to clear sufficient space so we can work in the application area. Our installation team takes protective measures for furniture; for small applications minimal rearrangement is sufficient.
How can I request a quote?
You can reach us by phone (+90 530 044 09 90), WhatsApp or our contact form. After a brief conversation we schedule an on-site survey.
