PVC / rubber acoustic barrier

High-density PVC + rubber acoustic barrier. With 4-8 kg/m² added to a build-up it raises Rw by 5-10 dB; the base layer of sandwich sound-insulation systems.

TL;DR

PVC rubber barrier is a high-density acoustic membrane made by adding barium-sulphate filler to a PVC + synthetic-rubber compound. Available in 4-8 kg/m² weights, it is used as a sandwich layer between plasterboard and foam; it can raise a build-up's Rw value by 5-10 dB. Flexible, easy to cut and economical.

What is a PVC rubber barrier?

A PVC rubber barrier is a flexible polymer membrane loaded with high-density mineral filler. By the mass law, acoustic performance is proportional to mass; a thin membrane is the most practical way to add mass to a build-up and lift airborne sound insulation.

Technical data

  • Density: 1600-2000 kg/m³
  • Surface weight: 4 / 6 / 8 kg/m²
  • Thickness: 2 / 3 / 4 mm
  • Rw gain: 26-32 dB (single layer); +5 to +10 dB in a sandwich
  • Flexibility: high, can be cut with scissors
  • Fire class: BS 476 Class 0, UNI 9175 Class 1IM

Where it is used

  • Residential and office wall/ceiling sandwich systems
  • Party-wall insulation between flats
  • Studio, recording-room and cinema walls
  • Above suspended ceilings to stop sound bleed
  • Shafts and service penetrations
  • Industrial doors, panels and enclosures

Where does it sit in a sandwich?

The barrier is placed between two rigid faces (plasterboard, OSB, MDF) or between foam and a rigid face. The most efficient stack is: plasterboard + foam + barrier + foam + plasterboard. This sandwich gains 15-20 dB in Rw versus a single plasterboard layer.

How is it installed?

The barrier comes on rolls; it is fixed to the wall with staples or acoustic adhesive. Joints are overlapped by 5 cm and sealed with acoustic tape. Sockets, switches and conduits are sound bridges and must always be sealed with acoustic mastic.
