EPDM barrier is a high-density acoustic membrane made from ethylene-propylene-diene rubber. With its temperature (-40 °C to +120 °C), UV, ozone, water and oil resistance it is used for airborne sound insulation in façades, roofs, MEP rooms and wet areas. With 2-8 kg/m² weight options, when added to a build-up it raises the Rw value by 5-10 dB.
What is an EPDM barrier?
An EPDM barrier is a high-density synthetic rubber membrane reinforced with heavy mineral fillers (barium sulphate). Compared to classic PVC barriers it is significantly more resistant to outdoor exposure and is therefore the preferred sound-insulating layer for roofs, façades, MEP rooms and shaft applications.
Technical data
- Density: 1500-1800 kg/m³
- Surface weight: 2 / 4 / 6 / 8 kg/m²
- Thickness: 1.2 / 2.5 / 4 / 6 mm
- Temperature range: -40 °C / +120 °C
- Water, UV, ozone resistance: high
- Fire class: BS 476 Class 0, EN 13501 B-s2,d0
Where it is used
- Roof and terrace floor sandwich build-ups
- MEP rooms, boiler rooms and generator rooms
- Shafts, lift wells and service penetrations
- Behind walls of bathrooms, kitchens and wet areas
- Industrial machinery enclosures
- Façade acoustic claddings
Why choose EPDM?
- Performance is preserved under water and humidity
- No cracking under UV and ozone exposure
- Flexibility maintained over a wide temperature range
- High density → strong mass-law gain
- Long service life (15+ years)
How is it installed?
The EPDM barrier is installed as a sandwich layer between plasterboard, OSB, foam and panels. Joints are overlapped by at least 5 cm and sealed with acoustic tape. Edge leakage governs performance: a single 2 mm gap can cost 5-8 dB.
