Environmental noise barriers

Acoustic-barrier screen systems for highways, factory perimeters, cooling towers and industrial areas. 15-25 dB reduction to protect residential areas.

Summary

Environmental noise barriers are acoustic-screen systems erected to protect residential and sensitive spaces near highways, factories, railways, cooling towers and industrial areas. A correctly designed barrier delivers 15-25 dB reduction between source and receiver; a key engineering tool for environmental compliance and complaint mitigation.

What is an environmental noise barrier?

An environmental noise barrier is a structural wall or screen placed between a noise source and the receiver (residences, hospitals, schools) to block the direct propagation path of the sound wave. With the right height, thickness and material choice, it delivers 30-70% perceived sound reduction.

Where is it used?

  • Roadside (sound barrier)
  • Railway-line edges
  • Factory perimeter wall
  • Cooling-tower surrounds
  • Outdoor generator-unit surrounds
  • Construction sites (temporary barrier)
  • Charging stations / industrial pumps

Barrier design criteria

  1. Height: must break the line of sight (source-receiver)
  2. Length: sufficient against flanking
  3. Density: min. 20 kg/m² (Rw 25+ dB)
  4. Surface absorbent (receiver side): reduces reflections
  5. Airflow (if needed): visual openness + acoustic labyrinth
  6. Weather resistance: UV, moisture, temperature

Barrier types

  • Fully reflective: concrete, wood, metal panel — reflects back to source
  • Absorbent-reflective: sound-absorbing fill on the receiver side — quieter back
  • Transparent barrier: acrylic / glass, visual openness + acoustic protection
  • Green barrier: plant-supported (limited acoustic impact, mainly visual)
  • Mobile / portable: for sites, temporary

Performance calculation

Barrier reduction is calculated based on source type, distance, height differential and frequency. In our practice we use SoundPLAN simulation for every barrier to map the sound; the dB reduction at the receiver point is calculated in advance.

Target performance

  • Perceived reduction: 15-25 dB
  • Environmental compliance: 45-55 dBA limit
  • Barrier Rw: 25+ dB
  • Flanking minimum

Lead time and cost

Highway barrier 6-16 weeks. Factory perimeter barrier 4-8 weeks. Investment is calculated per length × height.

Frequently Asked Questions

Environmental noise barriers — which materials do you use?
Depending on project requirements, we use acoustic foam, barrier-backed foam, lead/EPDM barrier, elastomeric rubber, rock wool and double-layer plasterboard systems. All our materials carry international fire-resistance certifications.
How much noise reduction do I get after the application?
It varies according to the existing structure, the adjacent noise level and the target use. Typical residential applications achieve 25-40 dB and industrial projects 35-55 dB. The exact value is confirmed by acoustic measurement.
Do I need to move my existing furniture?
It is enough to clear sufficient space so we can work in the application area. Our installation team takes protective measures for furniture; for small applications minimal rearrangement is sufficient.
How can I request a quote?
You can reach us by phone (+90 530 044 09 90), WhatsApp or our contact form. After a brief conversation we schedule an on-site survey.
