Pipe insulation (thermal + acoustic)

What is pipe insulation?

Pipe insulation is the process of providing the right thermal and acoustic wrap around a pipe. An uninsulated pipe loses heat, sweats, and radiates flow noise (especially at high speed). Correct insulation reduces heat loss by 70-90%, eliminates condensation and cuts noise by 10-20 dB.

Insulation materials

• Rubber-foam jacket (NBR/EPDM): -200 °C / +120 °C, cold lines
• Mineral-wool pipe jacket: high temperature (steam, boiler)
• Glass-wool fill + aluminium shell: industrial process
• Acoustic jacket sandwich: barrier + foam combination
• PVC outer shell + tape: aesthetic and mechanical protection

Dual function: thermal + acoustic

• Thermal insulation: λ = 0.033-0.040 W/mK range
• Acoustic insulation: +10-20 dB with combination sandwich
• Condensation control: water-vapour barrier
• Fire safety: A1/A2 mineral, B-s2, d0 rubber
• Mechanical protection: PVC or aluminium outer shell

Installation

Split tube is fitted around the pipe and the joint is closed with acoustic tape; contact adhesive seals the seam. For sheet wrap the pipe circumference is measured and cut to the right width. Bends, tees and valves are closed with pre-formed parts or site cuts.
